CPAM Leadership Seminar, October 15, 2025, 1:30-4:30 PM

Visualization in a Language-Rich Mathematics Class, K-12, Jill Gough

Don’t miss this opportunity to spend the afternoon prior to the opening of the NCTM Annual Meeting in Atlanta with your CPAM colleagues and Jill Gough, PA 1998 Secondary. This seminar is the twenty-first in the series of CPAM Leadership Seminars and is made possible by a grant from Texas Instruments. CPAM gratefully acknowledges the support of TI.

Check-in begins at 1:00 PM with the program starting promptly at 1:30 PM EDT. Refreshments will be provided.

Great teachers know that the search for meaning occurs through pattern recognition, that learning relies on memory and attention, and all new learning passes through the filter of past experiences. If we teach at the secondary level, do we know the routines and strategies used by elementary teachers to build conceptual understanding? Do we, as secondary teachers, begin from these prior experiences to build new knowledge and skills? If we teach at the elementary level, do we know where the routines, strategies, and concepts will be applied?

As the K-12 team of teachers and coaches, how might we build upon students' past experiences and prior knowledge to deepen student understanding? Are there topics and concepts that we teach that should be transferable? How often do we find ourselves reteaching what our students should already know? Is it that they have not been taught? Is it that they put the information in their short term and/or working memory only? How are we intentionally and explicitly helping students acquire and retain what they need?

In this session, we will explore ways to

● Apply orthographic mapping, the process of storing a word permanently in memory for instant retrieval, so that students have less relearning to do.

● Connect prior knowledge to launch new learning by exploring the K-12 trajectory.

● Strengthen student understanding, confidence, and sense-making through retrieval practice and high-quality feedback.

● Leverage the power of visualization to build visual, symbolic, and conceptual knowledge by integrating a multi-sensory approach.

Jill Gough, Director of Teaching and Learning at Trinity School in Atlanta since 2012, facilitates professional development opportunities, builds teacher-administrator partnerships to facilitate a collaborative learning community, and leads educator observations and assessments. Jill regularly presents at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics to deliver professional learning opportunities. In addition, she is a National T³ Instructor, working with Texas Instruments and T³ to deliver quality professional development for educators interested in using technology to facilitate learning and assessment that is interactive, dynamic, and collaborative. An avid sketchnote artist, Jill’s sketches have been featured by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Kennesaw State University Conference, and various other conferences.
